Pieter Brueghel

Pieter BrueghelPieter Brueghel the older, the most significant and most thrilling Renaissance painter and graphic artist of Northern Europe, during the middle part of the sixteenth century, was probably known for his sceneries and farm scenes.

He was a Dutchman and his nickname "farmers Brueghel" indicate his subject: Farm lives, sayings and genre scenes, subjects of the new testament among everyday people of contemporary Flanders returned.

The attention on the life and behaviour of farmers was rare in the arts of the time of Bruegels. Pieter Brueghels crude, unsentimental, but lively picture of the rituals of living agriculture, hunts, meals, parties, dances and plays - is a unique window on a disappeared national culture and a main spring of ikonografischer proofs, about physical ones as well as about social aspects of the life of the 16-th century.

Pieter Brueghel specialised in sceneries populated by farmers. He is often called the first western painter who painted sceneries around ihretwillen and not as a scenery to a religious allegory.

His nickname 'farmer Brueghel' distinguishes him from other members of the dynasty of Brueghel. From 1559 Pieter Brueghel 'h' from his name dropped and started signing his pictures as a Bruegel.

Pieter Brueghel was born as a son of a farmer who lived in a village called Breughel. The young Pieter Brueghel became an artist in the apprenticeship given whose daughter Pieter Brueghel has married later very probably the Pieter Coecke van Aelst, to a leading Antwerpener. His mother-in-law was also a painter which miniatures painted. Then Pieter Brueghel was the father of Pieter Brueghel the younger and Jan Brueghel the old person. Both became painters, but because they were very small children when her father died, received to no one education from him. According to Carel van Mander it is likely that they were trained by her grandmother.

In 1551 became Pieter Brueghel master of the Antwerpener guild. He travelled shortly after to Italy and then returned to Antwerp, before he sat down 10 years later in Brussels permanently. Pieter Brueghel died there on the 9th September 1569 and was buried in the Notre lady de la Chapelle, Brussels. The traditional pictures of Pieter Brueghel are a few in the number - under fifty.
